Sore After Starting Walking? What to Adjust

New activity can create ordinary muscle fatigue, but worsening or sharp pain deserves a different response.

Notice the type and pattern

General muscle tenderness that settles can differ from sharp, localized, swelling, or worsening pain. Do not use an article to diagnose an injury.

Reduce the next load

Shorten the walk, slow the pace, choose flatter ground, or add recovery time. Returning at a lower load is more useful than alternating between overdoing it and stopping completely.

Check friction and fit

Shoes, socks, seams, and repeated rubbing can create problems that fitness will not solve. Address hot spots early instead of waiting for a blister to make the decision.

Get help when appropriate

Pain that changes your gait, persists, follows an injury, or concerns you should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.

Adjustment is part of starting. Pain is information, not a character test.
